Calcium ( 1 )

Rs .200

Calcium is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body and plays a pivotal role in human physiology. About 99 % of the calcium in our body is in our bones, primarily as hydroxyapatite, which is a crystal lattice composed of calcium, phosphorous and hydroxide. In addition to building bones and keeping them healthy, calcium also plays a vital role in the basic physiological process  as, blood dotting, neural transmission, enzyme activity, maintenance of normal tone and muscles contraction. It is also involved in glandular synthesis and regulation of exocrine and endocrine glands as well as preservation of cell membrane integrity and permeability. Each day, we lose calcium through our skin, nails, hair, sweat, urine and feces, but our body cannot produce new calcium. Hence, it must be absorbed from lire food we eat. To effectively absorb calcium from food, our body need Vitamin D. The serum levels of calcium are strictly regulated and an insufficient calcium intake is met by a more efficient intestinal absorption and renal conservation of calcium. Calcium is also mobilized from the skeleton, which can lead to bone loss and subsequent risk of fractures.Calcium Test Cost is given above.

Calcium exists in scrum or plasma in three distinct forms;

  • Free or Ionized calcium: Physiologically active form, which accounts for about 50%of total calcium.
  • About 5% of total calcium is complexed with variety of anions, particularly phosphate and citrate.
  • Remaining 45% of calcium is bound to a plasma protein, especially to albumin, but also to globulin to a limited extent.
