Progesterone ( 1 )
Progesterone: Progesterone is a steroid hormone It is synthesized in corpus luteum, produced by ovarian follicle during luteal phase of menstrual cycle. Adrenal glands and placenta also secrete this hormone. In the ovaries pregnenolone gets converted to progesterone with the help of enzymes secreted by cells of corpus luteum. Progesterone serves as a precursor in the biosynthesis of cortisol and steroids such as estrone, estradiol and androstanedione. The progesterone prepares the body for pregnancy in the event of fertilisation of egg. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum breaks down, the production of progesterone falls and a new menstrual cycle begins.
