Testosterone is a steroid hormone, an androgen produced by the Leydig cells of the testes and adrenals in males in trace amounts by the ovaries in the female. It is chiefly responsible for the development of secondary sexual characters in males. In both sexes, testosterone is responsible for maintenance of bone density, sex drive, fat distribution, red blood cell production, muscle strength and mass. Testosterone also maintains functions of prostrate and seminal vesicles in the male. The levels of testosterone in blood change during different phases of growth. During adolescence and early adulthood, testosterone levels are high and decline with age.
